RE: Please pray for the Outdoorsman

Thank you all for your heartfelt prayers, thoughts, and words. My husband is doing better, but not yet stable. Yes beemerphile1 he is a disabled veteran with a strong history of patriotism to his country. The problems he is having now are a direct result of his service connected disabilities. If I could please ask all y'all to continue to pray for his health and his doctor's wisdom. Thank You all so very much.

Please pray for the Outdoorsman

I had to put my husband in the hospital last night. He is very sick. I know he comes to this place because he talks about it. For all y'all that pray, please pray for his recovery. I will give updates when I can. Thank You so very much.

RE: The hunt is on, where to look....

OUTDOORSMAN I didn't make the comment for you, although some of your previous remarks toward other well intending posters have certainly caused me to want to comment. You wouldn't have liked what I would have said so I didn't. You can't make other folks comments look bad and then not expect them to defend themselves. Sorry you're upset but it was you that quoted me initially wasn't it? Look at the bright side. At least you have a cheerleader (surveyorjp) above.

RE: towing weight recommendations

I also think the red portion of the post you highligted was right on target and your "PERSONAL OPINION in your post just differs than my personal opinion here. One is not better than the other regardless of what you might think. The red portion I highlighted is absolutely unsubstantiated and I gave proof of that. The rest of your comments are nothing but fodder for you to argue so I'm not waisting my time. Happy Camping.

RE: towing weight recommendations

Excellent posts, especially campercajun and LarryJM....but....there are too many who will dismiss these as 'weight police' and then proceed to recommend to over load or juice it up to go faster. All of this is really an individuals risk management decision (gambling) Some will push the limits and beyond, while others will stay below. Overloading won't have the wheels instantly fall off. Just sooner and dependent on how much overloaded, maintenance, etc. **AND** it will take longer to stop, that is a fact. Best advice I have is to read up and weigh everyones input, but know that there is only one person responsible for the setup and it is the driver. None of the advisor's here or any other Internet forum will any liability. Plus when that bad/worse day crosses someones path, they will not have time to go back to the store for bigger/better/proper/etc components, nor re-setup. Either it is there spot on or not. This is not even close to being fact. Actually it is an untrue and unsubstantiated statement. Truck brakes are designed to stop the truck and trailer brakes are designed to stop the trailer. If my fifth wheel is within it's weight ratings, it's brakes will do what they are designed to do - stop the entire weight of the trailer, including the pin weight - whether I'm pulling it with a 3/4 ton SRW or a 1 ton DRW. Also since a 3/4 ton and a 1 ton dually have the exact same brakes, the lighter (overloaded as you put it) truck will stop quicker since it doesn't weigh as much. Wheels will only "fall off sooner", as you put it, if the axle ratings are exceeded. All components are designed to do their job and last as long as they would any other time if the owner stays within the axle weight ratings. Please be careful about making incorrect sweeping statements that are designed only to sway new persons to your way of thinking. You are not doing anyone any favors by doing that, especially the new person who is looking for true information. I don't think people being concerned about weight are called "weight police" to use your term above, but I do think the term weight police describes those who make up information just to sway others thinking.

RE: Cracks in finish

If the dealer determines it's a manufacturer's defect, Monaco may still cover it.Not unless you are the original owner and it is within 3 years of the date of purchase. Money is tight with these guys right now and they will be sticklers about these types of things. You know this for sure? And is that why Monoco told him to take it to a dealer and have it looked at - so they could just flat turn him down?

RE: more DirectTV questions

I can think of several reasons why I might want multiple tv's on the same program.. For example as I move about the house I can continue to watch the showThen put them all on the same channel. But does that mean you should be forced to have them all on the same program everytime you turn them on?

RE: more DirectTV questions

Reread the original post. I am not reading anything into it. They didn't say that they wanted to watch different things at the same time. They stated very clearly that they couldn't get the rear tv to show anything. You're kiddin' me Right! Why would anyone want to have a television in more than one room that has to be tuned to the same program, when it's just as easy to have them work indepentently from the same satellite dish? Do all of the televisions in your house have to watch the same program? I read the original post - I made an assumption that people want to use equipment the way it is supposed to be used. I don't mean to sound sarcastic here, but why are we having this conversation?

RE: The hunt is on, where to look....

MadMav, I don't know if it would be worth looking at Ebay or not, but it's certainly another source. If you don't know then why did you make this comment? There are great deals on Ebay. When I was looking, In one week I found a 1 year old duramax dually crew cab with under 25,000 miles on it - loaded for under $30,000. That's when the market was strong, there are probably much better deals out there now.

RE: So this is what is happening to the dealers now

They estimate that the bailout will cost $38,000 for every man, woman & child in the country. I have an idea........How about giving that money to the people? With cash in our pockets we don't need credit. We could afford our homes, pay off our creditcards, buy health ins., send our kids to college, replace our 10 yr. old car & in general give a good swift kick to our economy. Let the Wall street banks collapse. The banks that have practiced smart business will survive. What do you think? $3,800 not $38,000

RE: 20 amp, 30 amp & 50 amp?

The amount of amperage draw (electricity needed) of a trailer has nothing to do with it's length - it has to do with it's equipment. To run everything in my RV at once, I need 50 amp service. My RV has 2 air conditioners and is wired for 50 amps, but since I don't have to run both air conditioners at the same time, I can camp at a 30 amp site which allows me to only run one air conditioner and everything else in my coach. At home I am always plugged into a 20 amp outlet to keep my batteries charged, but I can also run one air conditioner, and nothing else if I want to cool the inside down a bit. I wouldn't be able to camp at 20 amps unless I didn't need a microwave and air conditioning. It only takes adapters to be able to plug into each of the different amperage outlets.

RE: towing weight recommendations

These folks are not comfortable unless they have twice as much tow vehicle as they really need, but when they give you their personal opinion, they make it sound like, if you don't listen to them, you are being unsafe. Actually, I have not seen anybody here doing what you said. All they are doing is advising based on what they have found to be true in their own experiences. I didn't see a single person say anything would be unsafe - only what would make a comfortable, enjoyable towing experience. Not in this thread no, but in most other weight threads yes that is always happening. Based upon my experience, if they followed the advice you give in your last sentence, they could very well NOT have a comfortable, enjoyable, and SAFE tow. This is your opinion based on your preferences. If you are going to make a sweeping statement like this at least say YOU wouldn't be comfortable - That's fair. Don't tell them they won't be comfortable. There is nothing wrong with towing up to the manufacturer tow rating.

RE: So this is what is happening to the dealers now

So sad, and our Lawmakers can do nothing but pontificate and fight and position themselves to blame somebody else when they are at the root of the problem. Just sad. They are more interested in pointing the finger at someone else so they can get re-elected. It's not about what's good for the country, it's about keeping power. What is really sad is that we put them into power. Now we are reaping what we have sewn.

RE: Chinese Tire..any good?

On a previous trailer, I replaced the chinese tires with BF Goodrich Commercial T/As matched to the GVWR of the trailer.

RE: The hunt is on, where to look....

If you can't find a good deal locally, why not fly to the location of a good deal and drive the vehicle back? I found mine at a dealership on Ebay, went there and drove the truck back. The dealer said, if the truck didn't check out just like they advertised, they would pay to fly me back. I went over it with one of their mechanics and made a good deal.

RE: towing weight recommendations

Buying our first travel trailer. We have a Yukon XL with a towing capacity of 8000#. Different people are giving various advice about how much weight it can comfortably tow. How close should someone be to the manufacturer's recommendation? Is 6800# empty weight too much? How much of an effect would it have? ThanksIt is fine to tow up to the manufacturer's recommended towing capacity. The reason you are getting different opinions is because some folks are giving you a personal preference, and not the facts. These folks are not comfortable unless they have twice as much tow vehicle as they really need, but when they give you their personal opinion, they make it sound like, if you don't listen to them, you are being unsafe. Absolutely not the case. There is also not any reason to waste part of your tow vehicle's capabilities by only towing 80% of what the manufacturer says it can tow. That is again people making up their own rules. Tow what the manufacturer says and you'll be fine. Also remember that the empty weight doesn't include the weight of all of the stuff you will load into it. What is the GVWR of the trailer - try to keep that about the same as your tow vehicle's tow rating.

RE: 2500HD wheels

There are plenty of simulators that you can buy to spruce up the look of the wheels.

RE: 2500HD(gas) vs. 2500HD(diesel)

The real catch with 2500HD diesel trucks is not the towing ability, but the GVWR. The Duramax version is much heavier than the 6.0L gas version. For example, my '04 2500HD 2WD crew cab weighs 6,300# with 2 adults and a full tank of fuel. A similar Duramax truck will easily tip the scales at 7,000#. So, while I have about 2,900# of cargo capacity available for the 5er hitch, extra stuff, and pin weight the diesel version only has about 2,200# available........ Nope! Truck in my sig weighs 6600# with fuel. Yes I agree you lose around 600# cargo capacity with a diesel, another 400# with a 4x4 so they are really generally only suited to smaller (under 30') fivers. I'm under 16,000# Gross Combination weight, or 6000# under the GCWR and my truck laughs at it. Rarely shifts down once it is in Overdrive. I get a little over 13mpg.The manufacturer GVWR is meaningless when it comes to determining what the truck can tow. Let me give you an example. You can register whatever GVWR you want with your state. You can pay to make 3/4 ton rated to have a GVW of 12000 lbs on the registration if you want to. The manufacturer GVWR is only a recommendation. Go by the axle weight ratings and tire weight ratings, that is the true measure of what the truck can do.
